Crime against women is on the rise in Vijayawada city in 2017. The city police booked 992 cases in 2017 against the 902 cases in 2016. The cases include dowry death, abetment to suicide, harassment, murders, rape, kidnappings / abductions, outraging of modesty, insulting/ intimidating women.  

Vijayawada: Crime against women is on the rise in Vijayawada city in 2017. The city police booked 992 cases in 2017 against the 902 cases in 2016. The cases include dowry death, abetment to suicide, harassment, murders, rape, kidnappings / abductions, outraging of modesty, insulting/ intimidating women.

Disclosing details of the crime against women here on Friday, Commissioner of Police Gowtham Sawang said that 10 dowry deaths, 33 cases of abetment to suicide, 450 harassment cases, eight murder cases, six rape cases, 71 cases related to rape with technical relationships (lovers), 23 kidnap and abduction cases, 267 cases of outraging modesty and 124 cases of intimidating and insulting women cases were registered in the city this year.

But, there is a variation of cases related to different types of crimes. Cases related to dowry deaths, women murders, women kidnap cases, rape cases, women harassment cases declined. But, cases related abetment to suicide, domestic violence, cheating, insult to women and extra marital cases increased in the city.

The Commissioner said novel initiatives taken by the city police like Mahila Mithra, Mahila Rakshak teams, Vriddha Mithra and Bala Mithra are very useful to women and girls and it had changed the perception of women in the city. He said more than 1,880 eve teasers were given counselling by police with the help of NGOs this year.

He further stated that 148 girl missing cases were reported but 142 of them were successfully traced by the police in 2017. Referring to call money cases, in which many women were forced to face physical and mental problems, the Commissioner of Police said the police received 1,827 complaints and 834 of them were solved with the help of lawyers, NGOs and counsellors.
