Vijayawada: The crime rate has slightly gone up under the limits of police commissionerate in 2017 compared to 2016 despite implementing criminal detection system and keeping a vigil round-the-clock. Cases of murders, rapes, kidnappings, cheating cases, bodily attacks continued across the city.

Addressing a media conference at the Command Control Room, Commissioner of Police D Gowtham Sawang on Friday explained the details of the crime rate in the city. A total of 754 major crimes were recorded in the city in 2017 against the 729 cases booked in 2016.

Disclosing details of bodily offences, he said 33 murders, including murder for gain took place in the city. A total of 77 rapes, three culpable homicides, 596 injured in attacks and other cases registered in the city in 2017.

Commissioner of Police said police are using dial 100, E Rakshak, Reception Centres, 4th Lion, Verifast and social media for the convenience of the people and to check the crime rate in the city. He further stated that police are using digital beat system, e-Verification, e-Periscope, e-Netra, geo-mapping, e-Challan, CMS and CDS as part of the investigation of cases.

Property offences: Following are the property related offences booked in the city. A total of 295 house burglary cases, 694 automobile theft cases, 80 chain snatching cases, 147 cell phone theft cases and 753 other theft cases were registered in 2017. Besides, 75 robber cases were also booked.

However, there is decrease in property offences in 2017 compared to 2016. The police booked 2,379 cases in 2016 and it reduced to 2,051 cases in 2017. Due to demonetisation, IT/ cyber related fraud cases shot up in the city in 2017. Police booked 24 online offences using Facebook, 21 cases booked for sending derogatory messages through SMS and five cases through e mails.

He said 185 cases were booked under IT Act. Besides, police registered 120 cheating cases as cheats hoodwinked the gullible people by promising jobs, goods, loans, dealership etc. Besides, online bank fraud cases through One Time Pass word also increased in the city.

The cheats robbed Rs 63,09,985 from the victims. But the police able to recover and returned Rs 27,83,649 to the victims. The police booked 120 online bank fraud cases in 2017 against the 52 cases booked in 2016. In all, 185 cyber cases were booked in 2017 against the 87 cases recorded in 2016.
