Kurnool: The sale of spurious pesticides is taking place on a large scale in the district. Several brands have been proved to be of inferior quality after conducting laboratory tests. But, the companies concerned, and dealers are promoting the products in the market in a big way. Farmers, who are unaware of spurious brands are purchasing and using them in their farm fields and suffering huge losses.

Mandal Agriculture Officers (MAOs) have to secure the pesticide samples of the brands concerned and have to send them for laboratory for a quality check. If the pesticides are proved to be of sub-standard quality or spurious then the officials should initiate action against the pesticide companies.

The MAOs collected samples of 575 brands and sent for the lab testing. After conducting tests, it was found 13 pesticide samples were of inferior quality. The sub-standard pesticide brands have been identified as Propinopas 15 EC (three samples) of Coromandel Fertilizers, Sipermythrin 10 EC (one sample) of Dhanuka Agri-Tech, Azadirachtin 0.5 EC of Heramb Industries Limited, Asiphet 75 pc sp (seven samples) of Hindustan Insecticide limited and Imida clofrid of AG-3 of Agro Product Limited.

On receiving information about the spurious brands, the Commissioner of Agriculture has ordered the officials concerned to initiate appropriate action. Unfortunately, prior to initiating action on the spurious brands, the companies stopped sale of pesticides.

The officials of the Agriculture department have to issue notices to the manufacturers of pesticides and dealers, but it was not done, it is learnt. Speaking to The Hans India, Assistant Director for Agriculture said 20 cases have been filed against manufacturers of spurious pesticides.

“All the cases have been referred to the court and they are still pending. We don’t have the authority to seize the shops or brands. The court would take up the cases directly,” he added.
