Amaravati: State government is considering maximum utilisation of Sileru river water for hydro power generation by setting up a new power house jointly with Odisha at Chitrakonda, installing another two new units at Lower Sileru and a pump storage plant at Upper Sileru. The State could get around 1,290 mw of hydel power if the plans are implemented.

Though the State government completed civil works for six units, including power house for a hydroelectric project at Lower Siler, the present installed capacity of the project is 460 mw (115 mwx4 units) only. As the power canal capacity is insufficient, the APGenco has been utilising four units only. State government is now planning to enhance its capacity to 690 mw by bringing another two units into utilisation.

In fact, water is available throughout the year at Lower Sileru and the surplus water is around 2,500 during rainy and winter seasons. The APGenco releases surplus water without using for power generation.

A senior official of APGenco has said that it may not possible to enhance the capacity of power canal or excavate anther canal as ground levels are unsuitable in the deep forest area.

They were considering laying of penstock (pipeline) as an alternative. “We are waiting for feasibility report. If erecting of penstock is successful, additional 230 mw of power can be generated. But, we have doubts that the expenditure will be high for the project.”

The State government has also settled pending issues with Odisha government on setting up new hydro power house at Chitrakonda with an installation capacity of 60 mw. The issue of set up a power house at Balimela reservoir in Odisha has been pending since 1994. “We are ready to start works of power house once the Odisha government signs the agreement,” said the Genco official.

On other hand, the APGenco is also planning an underground pump storage power plant at Upper Sileru to absorb renewable energy by recycling the water by using reversible operation technology in addition to the existing 240 mw power generating station. The advantage of this storage pump house is the used water of Upper Sileru hydro powerhouse can be stored in the underground storage pump house during the off-peak season.
