Nellore: Agriculture Minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy said they would place an appeal before the Chief Minister for allocation of additional 5 tmcft of water form Pothireddypadu head regulator for meeting the demand of irrigation water in the region.

On Friday, the Minister visited left canal of the Kandaleru Reservoir constructed at a cost of Rs 60 crore. He said 240 cusecs of water from the reservoir was released to Kanuparthi Tank and consequently farmers in Podalakur area would get water for their irrigation needs. Water was being released from the reservoir only when the storage level exceeds 30 tmcft of water.

Now, 274 tanks are being supplied water from the reservoir and 80,000 acres would be provided water. He also directed the police officials to book cases against people who illegally utilise water from irrigation canals.

The Minister distributed tractors to 25 farmers at Podalakur in a programme. Tension prevailed for some time as the Minister directed to stop water to Toderu tank located in Podalakur mandal which is native village of YSRCP district convener Kakani Govardhan Reddy.

Govardhan Reddy and his followers obstructed efforts of the officials. Kakani, interacting with media persons, said politics in water release are not appropriate and asked to be judicious. Officials, however, managed to reconcile infuriated YSRCP activists. Irrigation officials and others were present.
