Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh is going to establish a world-class power infrastructure in the green field capital city Amaravati at a cost of approximately Rs 16,383 crore.

As the government has decided to establish 100 per cent underground power lines for providing 100 per cent interruption free, high quality and reliable power supply, Amaravati may emerge as the first Indian city which will have overhead power lines free.

As Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has approved the project recently, a comprehensive plan has been readied over the project and the AP Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) and AP Transco will jointly take up the project. Tenders could be invited in January.

Massive power infrastructure will be provided in the capital city, including four 400/220 kv power substations, 220/33 kv substations - 24, 33 kv Switching Stations-220, 33 kv Ring main units -1,500 and other 13 kinds of infrastructure at a cost of Rs 16,383 crore.

During a video-conference on Sunday, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said that world-class power infrastructure was essential to attract global investors to the capital city. He said that 2018 would be “Energy Star Year” and vowed to transform every house in the State as ‘energy efficient home.’

He stressed the need of wider penetration of star-rated electric appliances in all households apart from all the government buildings. “It is high time to achieve energy efficiency by completing installation of over 30 lakh LED streetlights in all the gram panchayats, which will help to save energy to the extent of 333 million units and monetary savings of around Rs 200 crore per year,” he said.

It may be noted that AP power sector has won around 20 awards for the best performance and the Union Ministry of Power, BEE, ESSL came forward to support energy efficiency programs. “The State was able to achieve an estimated savings of over 1800 million units of energy worth approximately Rs 900 crore,” Naidu said.

Minister for Energy K Kala Venkata Rao, Chief Secretary Dinesh Kumar, Special Chief Secretary Satish Chandra, Principal Secretaries G Sai Prasad, Jawahar Reddy, Ajay Jain, K Vijayanand, Panchayat Raj Commissioner Ramanjaneyelu, Energy Department officials Dinesh Paruchuri, Umapathi, K Ranganatham, M M Nayak, H Y Dora and A Chandra Sekhar Reddy participated.
