14 smugglers held; red sanders worth `55 lakh seized

Nellore: Red sanders task force team along with the local police nabbed 14 inter-State and local smugglers at Rapur, Udayagiri and Somasila areas.

They seized 33 red sander logs worth Rs 55 lakh and 8 mobile phones. The accused were identified as M Subba Reddy, B Obulesu, A Chinnaiah, G Mallikarjuna, V Chinnaiah, S.Dhanavelu, B Prasanth, P Siva Sankar, D Suresh, S Balachandra, E Venkataiah, K Venkataiah, B Bujjaiah, and S Mahindra.

Addressing the mediapersons here on Tuesday, OSD-crimes T P Vithaleswar said that red sanders task force teams conducted simultaneous raids at Udayagiri, Rapur and Somasila areas. Vithaleswar said when they had tried to stop smugglers at all these three places, they attacked the police personnel by pelting stones on them. ‘Police had nabbed 4 accused under Rapur Police Station limits, 5 smugglers under Udayagiri Police Station limits and 5 under Somasila P.S limits,’ said the OSD. He also explained the modus operandi of red sanders smuggling. The smugglers from Tamil Nadu purchase red sanders logs from local smugglers of Veligonda forest area and shift them to the godowns in Chennai. They book containers and again shift the logs to other parts of the globe based on their contacts, he said.

‘Three teams have been formed to nab the smugglers who are at large,' said the senior police officer.

Vithaleswar said that they would attach assets of the smugglers who involve in red sanders smuggling. He said the police were keeping an eye on the activities of the smugglers across the district. He informed that they had filed 34 smuggling cases last year and nabbed 481 local, inter-state and international smugglers.

He said that they had seized 16.32 tonnes of red sanders logs worth Rs 16 crore last year. Task force teams have been conducting special counseling to the smugglers and coolies not to involve in smuggling activity.

The OSD appealed to the local people to inform the police through WhatsApp number ‘9390777727’ about red sanders smuggling in their areas. Somasila Sub-Inspector Jaganmohan Rao, Rapur SI B.Lakshman Rao and Udayagiri SI N Prabhakar were also present.
