Nellore: Agriculture Minister S Chandramohan Reddy has said that they will be sending proposals of Dugarajapatnam Port to the Centre for its reconsideration. He, along with the Municipal Administration Minister P Narayana, participated in the inaugural session of Flamingo Festival on Sunday morning and has said the State government has been conducting the festival for the last 12 years. Many winged guests from various parts of the globe are vising the place for breeding, he said.

The government will take up works with Rs. 48 crore for opening sea fronts at Pulicat Lake and also take measures to prevent entry of sea water into Kalangi River on a permanent basis. SHAR will contribute Rs 50 lakh for the work. Rest of the expenditure would be met by the State government.

Municipal Administration Minister Narayana has said birds from around 6,000 km reach the places in the district during winter and they return to their native lands along with siblings. The government has initially released Rs. 3 crore for conducting the festival and subsequently additional Rs. 3 crore were also released.

Development of tourism destinations will increase revenues at the places in the State and hence the state government had given priority for conducting Godavari and Krishna Pushkarams for attracting lakhs of devotees. Government has spent Rs. 1,500 crore for the Pushkarams. They had sanctioned Rs. 5.80 crore to Sullurpet Municipality, he said and regretted that only Rs 38 lakh were spent till now. The civic body has to spend the funds by March 15, otherwise they would be forwarded to the Public Health Department. He also said that 2,200 houses were sanctioned to the municipality.

Local legislator K Sanjeevaiah emphasised the need for protecting the environs of the Lake which plays key role in attracting the birds. Joint Collector A Md Imtiaz requested people to participate in the festival. MLC VN Reddy, Joint Collector-2 VVS Reddy, Managing Director of Sri City S Ravi, Municipal Chairperson Vijaya Lakshmi, ZPTCs Ravindra Reddy and Vijetha, Principal Chief Conservator of Wildlife Pradeep Kumar, DFO Hima Sailaja, and others were present.

District administration is organising the festival at four places - Sullurpet Junior College, B V Palem, Atakanitippa and Nelapattu. Pulicat Lake attracts 80-100 species of water birds that comes to around 60,000-80,000 migrant birds. They feed and breed in the Northern part of Lagoon during every winter. Many of them come from Ladakh, Tibet and China.
