Rajamahendravaram: The three-day Maha Padayatra of the Congress party activists to Polavaram Project commenced from Dowleswaram on Sunday. The Maha Padayatra will continue up to January 9. Subsequently, the Congress activists will observe Satyagraha at Polavaram village on January 10. The Congress leaders will cover a distance of 48 km during the Padayatra.

Inaugurating Congress Party's Maha Padayatra, Puducherry Chief Minister V V Narayanasamy claimed that the credit for construction of Polavaram Project goes to the Congress Party only as 71 per cent of works were completed during the tenure of former Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy. After coming to power in 2004, the former Chief Minister had put his focus on the Project. V Narayanasamy said the project would have been completed by now had YSR been alive.

Narayanasamy alleged that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was spending more time on publicity and delaying the project construction.

Stating that Polavaram Project is the lifeline of Andhra Pradesh, he said the Congress leaders and cadre should come forward to exert pressure on both the State and Central governments to complete the project without delay.

Pradesh Congress Committee president N Raghuveera Reddy alleged that the State and Central governments colluded with each other and were delaying the project intentionally.

He said the Congress cannot remain a mute spectator if both the governments neglect the project. The Padayatra is aimed at bringing pressure on the Centre and State to soon complete the multipurpose project.

Rajya Sabha MP Dr KVP Ramachandra Rao, former Union Ministers M M Pallam Raju, JD Seelam, Panabaka Lakshmi, Congress leaders Kanumuri Bapiraju, S Sailajanath, Vatti Vasantha Kumar, N Tulasi Reddy and G Rudraraju were present. Former MPs Vundavalli Arun Kumar and GV Harsha Kumar expressed their solidarity with the Padayatra taken up by the Congress party.
