The Hyderabad High Court has banned cockfights and all activities associated with it further directed the Andhra Pradesh government to strictly implement its ban during the Sankranthi festival.

The order has been issued following the preparations being made for the traditional sport in private farms during the festival of Sankranti in many districts.

Depending on the breed, roosters are being sold from Rs 10,000 to whopping Rs 1, 50, 000 for the cockfights.

The district collectors of East and West Godavari and other adjoining districts such as Krishna and Guntur have also been directed to constitute inspection teams to ensure that people don’t indulge in cockfights and take immediate action.

In order to prevent large gatherings, police have been instructed to impose Section 144 of the CrPC in villages of the West Godavari district.

A cockfighting and betting racket was busted by the task force police on Sunday in Hyderabad where 29 people were arrested.
