Nellore: Agriculture Minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy appealed to the farmers in the district to take up sericulture instead of paddy cultivation to get attractive profits.

Chandramohan Reddy attended the sericulture farmers’ awareness and training programme at new Zilla Parishad hall here on Friday. Addressing the meeting, the Agriculture Minister urged the farmers to take up sericulture cultivation.

He said it would enable farmers to secure a profit of Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh per acre. He explained that five persons will get work per acre if they take up sericulture cultivation. Karnataka stands first in the country in sericulture cultivation. While China tops the world in sericulture cultivation, India stands next.

“Farmers who have been cultivating paddy are not getting at least Rs 40,000 per acre. Ryots can cultivate mulberry utilising less amount of water to secure good profits,” the Agriculture Minister said. Farmers would get Rs 3.75 for every one rupee they spend on sericulture cultivation, he added.

The Minister informed that sericulture farmers have been utilising latest technology. He assured that they would support the farmers who take up sericulture cultivation.
