Rajamahendravaram: The Kasturba Gandhi Memorial Trust (KGMT) home is facing funds crunch for the last two years as the Central Social Welfare Board (CSWB) stopped releasing funds abruptly. Because of it, the inmates of the home are facing difficulty in getting their daily food and even the state government is not taking any initiative to extend any help to home.
Speaking to The Hans India here on Friday, KGMT representative G Suseela said the CSWB stopped funding to the home directing KGMT to convert it as 'Swadhar Gruha,' for which it need not give funds. Because of it, for 2016-17 the board stopped sending annual fund of Rs 10 lakh and for this year Rs 5 lakh so far.
Meanwhile KGMT also expressed its inability to sanction funds and with this, the future of home was in doll-drums. It is inevitable to mobilise funds from donors to run the home and to feed the inmates.
At present as many as 21 inmates in the age group of 15 to 35 years are staying in the home. The home is providing food to inmates with the help of donors and there is a need to find donors every day.
The monthly expenditure of home is nearly Rs 90,000 including an expenditure on each inmate is Rs 1,000. Last year, some philanthropists donated an amount of Rs 3 lakh, along with some essential commodities which were exhausted and again the problems were on the fore. Because of shortage of funds, the shop owners are not giving essential commodities and asking to pay old dues.
Meanwhile, MP Maganti Murali Mohan and Rajanagaram MLA Pendurthi Venkatesh assured to get funds from Central government or sanction funds from MP and MLA development funds, she said.
She further said the home came into existence in 1994 under the aegis of Kasturba Gandhi. The home was aimed to provide shelter to women destitute such as orphan children and women, divorced women and from poor families and the inmates can stay for a period of three years in the home. The home is imparting training to inmates in tailoring, embroidery, saree painting, nursery, manufacturing of paper covers and gas stove repairs. The training was also affected because of funds problem.
Two inmates of home K Asja and Jyothi said they are depending on donors to get their daily food and on Friday, one donor is sending food from Rajamahendravaram. All the inmates came to home because of various problems. Despite funds problem, the management is providing lunch and dinner and breakfast with a great difficulty.
