Vizianagaram: The cost of purchasing bricks has shot up considerably in recent times due to high demand in the district as lakhs of beneficiaries have undertaken the construction of toilets in their homes.

The district officials appealed to the beneficiaries under the toilets construction scheme to apply for the subsidy of Rs.15,000 per each unit, which in turn, gave a big push to toilet construction activities. Now, the brick-kiln manufacturers have handful of orders and are making good amount of profits too.

At present, the people in Vizianagaram district have already constructed two lakh toilets and around 1.80 lakh toilets are under construction in various mandals. Apart from this, the district got around 33,000 houses under various schemes from State and the Central governments.

Moreover, various private apartments are also being constructed all over the district. All these projects are under progress and a huge quantity of bricks are required to complete the construction.

However, the brick manufacturing units in this district are not in a position to meet the demand and the builders are forced to shell out more to complete their projects on time.

The price of each clay brick was around Rs 4 till the past few months, but now, the price has shot up to Rs 7 and a buyer is required to pay around Rs.28,000 per a tractor load (4,000) of bricks. Even the price of cement brick also reached Rs.15 from Rs 10 in the past few months.

B Ramesh, a middleman from Sunkaripeta, who supplies bricks and other construction material, said that he was getting a commission of Rs 0.25-0.50 on each brick to be supplied to builders and customers and making good profits.

Brick-kiln making units in Nellimarla, Garugubilli, Denkada are busy manufacturing these bricks and earning good profits. K Anand Kumar of Anand constructions, said, "Three of my apartment ventures are under construction right now.

The price of the brick has been rising abnormally in the past few months. I have been paying more than the regular price and completing my projects as I have commitment towards my customers to complete the construction of flats by March. This become an additional burden for me."
