Kurnool: The CPM state leader Kommireddy Prabhakar Reddy came down heavily on the TD government for its negligent attitude in constructing a bridge over the Krishna River connecting Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States.

Recalling the drowning incident that took place in the year 2007, the CPM leader said that around 65 persons have lost their lives for not having proper transportation facility to cross the river. He said all the persons travelling in the boat were drowned in the Krishna River while going to attend
‘Singotam Jatra’ in the Kollapur constituency.

Expressing concerning, Prabhakar Reddy said it was very unfortunate that even after ten years of the tragic incident, no steps were taken by the state government for the safety of the travellers, except remembering and mourning over the incident. He said the ‘Singotam Jatra’ starting from Thursday and devotees in thousands will attend the ‘Jatra’ being organised in Kollapur of Telangana State.

Devotees from Nandikotkur, Atmakurand Prakasam districts would cross theriver instead of travelling by bus as it was very risky and time consuming, he stated. Prabhakar Reddy stated that if a bridge connecting Nandikotkur and Kollapurwas constructed, then business transactions between two states would increase drastically.

Speaking to The Hans India, Kurnool Revenue Division Officer (RDO) Hussain Saheb said that the Revenue, Police and Irrigation departments were directed to take up safety measures.

The RDO said officials of the Irrigation department would inspect the boats as well as functioning of the motors after every trip while the cops would collect the information of the passengers.

The boat organisers were strictly ordered to supply life-saving jackets to passengers and each boat would accommodate a maximum of 18 passengers and not more, the RDO said.
