Visakhapatnam: Police are facing tough time in tackling house burglaries as 50 per cent of families in the city leave for their native places during festivals. Most of the salaried employees, who celebrate festival, leave for their native places during festivals.

Also, hawkers, small time traders, small hoteliers and street vendors are also leave for their hometowns. In fact, the city has been witnessing large number of house burglaries day and night. The police are alerting the people to communicate about their vacation to ensure a vigil on the localities.

According to the police records, 372 houses were burgled. Among these, 87 cases took place during the day time and 285 cases during the night, including 17 chain snatching incidents in 2017. Most of the crimes were registered during Pongal, Dasara and other vacations.

The police department had already introduced a public friendly application in 2017 called Locked House Monitoring System (LHMS) which can be downloaded from the play store with any android phone and to register their vacation period.

With the LHMS facility, if any person breaks the locks, an alarm bell will be sounded at both the police station and at the house of the owner. This facility will work round-the-clock. The gadgets are available at affordable costs, hence, police advised the people to purchase and arrange LHMS system at their houses.

“Every year, festival vacation is a challenge to the police as majority of the families leave the city. With the available staff, it is not possible to keep a vigil on every house and every area. However, we are taking precautionary measures and keeping an eye on the criminals. Already, the crime wing personnel on the job to ensure zero house breakings in the city, the police said.

“With the help of LHMS, our teams will reach the spot within five minutes. People have to be conscious about the unknown person’s movements in the areas. The people, who can afford should purchase LHMS, to ensure safety of their property. We are arranging special teams to ensure a strict vigil in the city during festival vacation,” DCP (Crimes) Shemushi Bajpai said.
