The books, which are around 23,000, are graded under various heads like Telugu and English literature, religion, spiritual, history, social sciences, medicine, engineering, science and technology, philosophy, personality development, Telugu fiction and children’s books.
Students flocked to the stalls where medicine and engineering books were kept and selected of their choice. Though everyone is entitled to select only two books, it was seen that many people selected more than two books and appealed the organisers to allow them to take them home. Many elderly persons were seen making rounds to collect books on spirituality.
Children accompanied by their parents were seen greedily collecting books two in their name and two more in their parent’s name.
Dr Raavi Sarada, general secretary of Andhra Pradesh Libraries Association, said that many people are making more than one round to collect two more books and though she knew she could not say anything since they are book lovers. She said that she was happy so many people are still clinging to the reading habit.
“The main idea of free distribution of books is to promote book reading among the new generation,” she averred. She said that this is the third year and this year also there is tremendous response from people like earlier times.
When asked how she could mobilise so many books, she said that she gave a call to people to donate books from their personal collection for free distribution.
“Though only 23,000 books were displayed in the various stalls here, there are several hundreds of books are in the office waiting to be sorted out,” she added.
Earlier, Mayor Koneru Sridhar inaugurated book distribution. Addressing a gathering, the Mayor said that he was happy to see so many book lovers at a time when the reading habit by and large is on the wane. He appealed the people to avail the opportunity of reading at least two books and return them next year to select two more books.Local corporator Chennupati Gandhi also attended the programme.
