The number of fire accidents declined by 13 per cent in Krishna district in 2017 compared to 2016 due to the awareness created by the fire services department on prevention of accidents and use of quality electrical equipment and material in the construction of houses, apartments and shops. 

Vijayawada: The number of fire accidents declined by 13 per cent in Krishna district in 2017 compared to 2016 due to the awareness created by the fire services department on prevention of accidents and use of quality electrical equipment and material in the construction of houses, apartments and shops.

The district fire services department is conducting awareness meetings every week across the district and trying to educate people particularly private security guards and women who use gas cylinders for cooking. Hundreds of classes were conducted in residential colonies, educational institutions and work places in the last one year.

A total of 1,996 fire accidents took place in the district in 2017 compared to 2,292 accidents in 2016. Only six major fire accidents took place in 2017 as against 10 in the previous year. Medium fire accidents remained at 46 for two years 2016 and 2017.

But the number of minor fire accidents decreased in the district last year. In all, 1,810 fire accidents were recorded in the district in 2017 as against 2,107 mishaps in 2016.

Fire services department is imparting training to hundreds of volunteers in how to extinguish fire as well as to take precautions to check accidents. Private security guards and other civilians are enthusiastically attending the training programmes conducted by the fire department. A senior fire department district official said the department is conducting at least 20 awareness programmes every month in the district on fire safety.

The department is also asking people to use quality equipment, wires and switches to check short-circuits. Though the number of accidents have been declined in 2017, the property loss had increased in the district. The loss was estimated at Rs.12.68 crore as against the property loss of Rs.7.37 crore in 2016.

On the other hand, the fire department staff saved property worth Rs 94.44 crore in 2017 as against the Rs.43.12 crore saved in 2016. In all, 21 fire engines are functioning in the district. Out of which five are located in Vijayawada city alone.

After the boat accident in Krishna river in November 2017, the fire services department is taking active part in prevention of boat accidents in Krishna district. Trained teams were deployed in Bhavani Ghat, Punnami Ghat and the Bhavani Island. These teams patrol Krishna river to check accidents and rescue the tourists in case of accidents.
