The programme is aimed to enhance the security of women and they should also go to public places on par with men in the city to fulfill their needs. For example, men are found in large numbers at tea stalls in the city. Not even one percent of the women customers visit tea stalls at the corners. In case of restaurants and hotels,both men and women visit them with their family members.

Recently, Commissioner of Police D Gowtam Sawang has constituted a 45-member team comprising 18 policemen, 24 Mahila Mitras, three members from Vasavya Mahila mandali and other NGOs to find out the reasons for it.

The members will visit various places inVijayawada city till the end of March and identify the places where women face problems and where women usually don’t go or don’t like to go. The team will analysewhy such incidents are taking place at a particular placeand why women are reluctant to go to some places.

The city police with NGOs and other stakeholders will discussions on the ways of responding and helping womenin using the public places. After examining the reasons, the police with the help of various government departments,will try to provide amenities to women at certain public places where they can go there without any fear.

The whole process is known as SARA, scanning, analysis, response and assessment said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Mahila police station) V V Naidu, while speaking to The Hans India here on Monday.

He said the whole process would be completed by the end of November. Listing out the steps taken in this regard, he said 50 ‘Mahila Rakshak’ teams were formed to check eve-teasing and 24 Mahila Mitras in the city were appointed to help women folk to get assistance from the police.

Besides, Mahila coordinators and Mahila facilitators were appointed by the Police Commissioner to help women to resolve their problems. Despite the efforts of the police and NGOs, many incidents of eve-teasing, rapes, molestation and other such incidents are taking place frequently on women.

The city police are making efforts with Vasavya Mahila mandali and International Foundation for Crime Prevention and Victim Care (PCVC), Chennai, to create awareness on the rights of women. Besides, the US Consulate, Hyderabad, is also rendering assistance to the city police.

Recently, a four-day workshop was conducted in the city as part of Community Led Action Programme (CLAPP) by the city police with the assistance of NGOs to prevent offences on women.
