Kurnool: District Collector S Satyanarayana and Superintendent of Police (SP) Gopinath Jetty have jointly made an appeal to the people to save their lives by following road safety rules. As part of week-long road safety celebrations, an awareness programme was organised at Sunaina Auditorium in the city on Tuesday wherein drivers and students took part in large numbers.

Speaking on the occasion, the Collector has said that in general, deaths are caused in road accidents involving people in the age group of 18 to 35 years and 29 per cent deaths were occurred along national highways.

“Everyone has to be aware of the road safety rules in addition to thorough knowledge of driving,” he stated. Auto drivers should not allow passengers beyond permitted capacity and should drive with limited speed besides possessing driving license, said the Collector. He urged the drivers not drive vehicles after consuming alcohol.

Last year, we were able to reduce road accidents to 13 per cent with which the district bagged second position in the state,’’ the Collector informed.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Gopinath Jetty has said that high speed and rash driving are leading to accidents.

To prevent the road accidents, everyone has to know about the road safety rules. The SP said 8,000 deaths were registered in the state and Kurnool alone has recorded 600 to 700. He stated 60 per cent of deaths were witnessed in the age group of 15-30 years.

It is the saddest part that the youth are falling prey to the road accidents. He advised the drivers to take rest between 1 to 4 am at toll plazas and resume driving after getting fresh.

He also appealed the motorists to wear helmets and save their lives. Road Transport Officer (RTO) Jagadheeswara Rao, Traffic DSP CM Gangaiah, DSP S Khader Basha, engineering students, auto and RTC drivers participated in the programme.
