Vijayawada: Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by the Vizag range DIG Srikanth began probe on Tuesday into the murder of B Pharmacy student Ayesha Meera, who was brutally murdered in a ladies hostel on December 27, 2007, at Ibrahimpatnam near Vijayawada.

Responding to the PIL filed by some social activists, the Andhra Pradesh High Court directed fresh SIT probe into the murder of Ayesha. The team inspected the Durga ladies hostel at Ibrahimpatnam along with the revenue and local police and spoke to the staff and other locals on Tuesday.

The SIT will submit its first report by April 25, 2018. Earlier, Vijayawada police registered a case on Satyam Babu, native of Nandigama in Krishna district, accusing him of murdering the student.

Mahila Court convicted Satyam Babu and sentenced him to life imprisonment in 2010. However, the Andhra Pradesh High Court acquitted Satyam Babu in April 2017 and he was subsequently released from the jail.

Later, the High Court ordered a fresh probe into the murder case and appointed Special Investigation Team. It further instructed that the probe should be conducted under its supervision and the first report should be submitted by April 25, 2018.
