The two-day annual conference of Association of Radiation Oncologists of India (AROI), Andhra Pradesh Chapter hosted by Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) began here on Saturday. 

Tirupati: The two-day annual conference of Association of Radiation Oncologists of India (AROI), Andhra Pradesh Chapter hosted by Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) began here on Saturday.

SVIMS Director-cum-Vice Chancellor Dr T S Ravikumar inaugurated the conference in which about 100 delegates from AP and Telangana have participated. In his inaugural speech, Dr Ravikumar congratulated SVIMS Radiation Oncology department and AP Chapter of AROI for organising the meet in Tirupati.

He exhorted the members of AP Chapter of AROI to put their expertise together, forming ‘Cooperative group’ to answer pressing questions in cancer through clinical trials and health research. The focus of the conference would be laid on most common malignancies of India, head and neck cancer, cancers like cervix and endometrium.

On the occasion, Dr Gangadhar Rao memorial oration was delivered by the president of AROI and Director of Apollo Cancer Hospital, Hyderabad Dr P Vijayanand Reddy, who spoke extensively on ocular tumours.

He dwelt at length on the various facets of ophthalmic tumours and the recent developments in the field with various examples through a power point presentation.
He said that retinoblastoma, a cancer in the inner part of eye, which generally affects children under the age of six, explained the various angles of the disease, its treatment and precautions.
