Penukonda (Anantapur): Works of Kia Motors, the South Korean automobile giant, at the project site in Erramanchi village in Penukonda mandal in the district is going on at a brisk pace, thanks to the efforts of the District Collector Veera Pandian. At the project site an administrative building was built and the works relating to staff quarters for about 2,000 Korean staff are under progress. Chief Minister is expected to inaugurate the new office building on February 22.

Highlights:

  • Car making unit to generate direct employment to 4,000 and indirect jobs to 3,000 people
  • Kia & Hyundai will jointly manufacture cars from Anantapur unit for the Indian market

All infrastructure facilities including water supply, power supply and laying of roads and approach roads were completed under the supervision of RDO Ramamurthy and Tahsildar Hassina Sultan. RDO is ensuring water supply to the order of 0.3 tmcft of water allocated for the project from Gollapalle reservoir. Rs 6 crore was earmarked for diverting three lakes, which pass through the lands and merge into a river nearby.

The project generates direct employment to 4,000 persons and indirect jobs to about 3,000 people. Also, several industrialists are expected to make a bee line to the region once the mega project is established. As many as 600 acres of land was identified for the Rs 13,000 crore project.

The Kia Motors has its own workforce of 2,000 Korean nationals at the project site. It is also engaged in village development and Swachh Bharat initiatives in all the government schools in the region.

With an eye on producing more cars for the Indian market, Hyundai and Kia Motors will jointly manufacture cars from Anantapur unit. Kia is investing close to Rs 13000 crore in the unit. The group will produce low cost cars for the masses. Although both Hyundai and Kia will be sharing the platform for their future products, the overall design of the final product will be different that will cater to all sections.
