Visakhapatnam: Opposing the Indian Railway Board’s decision that only ITI qualified to apply for the Group-D posts, thousands of Andhra University students took out a protest rally from University Library to Divisional Railway Manager’s office located at Dondaparty on Monday.

The students also staged dharna in front of the DRMs office. In the recent notification, the railway board announced 67,907 posts under Group-D cadre and ITI qualified persons only eligible for the posts.

Addressing students, AU student’s leader Anand Rao said that Indian Railways had released a notification with matriculation and few ITI trades for trackmen, gate men, pointsmen, helpers and porters under Group-D. With the ITI qualification large number of unemployed youth would lose the golden opportunity to get jobs in Indian railways, he said.

The Indian Railways should follow the old system and should announce all the posts with matriculation eligibility only, he demanded. The student leaders also announced till the government responds, they will intensify their agitation.
