In a boost to the construction of capital city of Amaravati, the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS)-2018 in New Delhi has endorsed Amaravati to be the ‘World’s Most Sustainable Capital City’ as a recognition to the efforts of the state government to build nine cities in the proposed capital as sustainable and economically potential.
Amaravati: In a boost to the construction of capital city of Amaravati, the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS)-2018 in New Delhi has endorsed Amaravati to be the ‘World’s Most Sustainable Capital City’ as a recognition to the efforts of the state government to build nine cities in the proposed capital as sustainable and economically potential.
The summit, in which over 40 countries participated, was conducted by world’s renowned think tank ‘The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).’ The TERI also agreed to support Amaravati in developing green buildings and promoting 100 per cent pollution free environment. “TERI Director general, Mathur said they were contemplating to organise a global energy efficiency summit in Amaravati,” Energy department said in press release here on Sunday.
In his message, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu urged the global experts to share innovative and sustainable technologies for development of Amaravati. He said the government has also focused on creation of integrated townships to accommodate the large scale population as AP could have an urban population of around 42-45% by 2029.
Making a presentation during the summit, Principal Secretary to Energy, I&I and CRDA Ajay Jain said AP government decided to adopt environmentally sound technologies and global best practices for achieving development in economic growth, level of urbanisation and increased climatic resilience.
Ajay Jain said that sustainable solution was envisaged for nine liveable cities in Amaravati to have a self-sustaining ecosystem with walk-to- work environment that generates its own economic growth and creates jobs and caters to social and recreational needs of employees.
“We are also going for non-polluting, micro small and medium enterprises, start-ups, light and green industries, service sector like banks, knowledge based industries, logistics and support system, skill development centre that create sustainable economic activity and jobs,” he explained.
Highlighting the major milestones of AP in energy efficiency and renewable energy sources such as LED street lighting, energy efficient pump sets and solar pump sets programmes etc, he stated the share of renewable energy generation in AP which was around 25% now would be increased to 50% to 60% by 2029.
He also informed the summit that the World Bank has supported Amaravati Sustainable Capital City Development Project (ASCCDP) which was aimed to build urban services of flood mitigation, sanitation and road connectivity for selected parts of capital city as well as develop capacity of its public urban governance institutions. CEO of State Energy Conservation Mission A Chandra Sekhar Reddy also participated in the summit.
