Kurnool: The peaceful agitation of lawyers demanding High Court in the district for the last one month took a violent turn with the advocates trying to barge into the Collectorate here on Tuesday. However, police thwarted their attempt leading to war-like situation for hours on the premises.

Police had to erect barbed wire fencing to keep the agitators away from the main gate of the Collectorate. A few advocates and police personnel suffered injuries in the melee. Bar association president V Naga Lakshmi Devi’s sari was torn and a woman police constable from SHE team suffered bruises on her hand.

Presence of Agriculture Minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy at the Collectorate seemed to have triggered the protest. Advocates who learnt about the Minister’s visit to the city wanted to hand over him a representation seeking establishment of High Court in Rayalaseema. But the police who were aware of the advocates’ plan, deployed additional forces including women constables.

Chandramohan Reddy attended a review meeting on the development of Mega Seed Park at Thangadancha village in Jupadu Bunglow mandal. A huge number of lawyers assembled at the Collectorate and wanted to meet the Minister but police prevented them.

They raised slogans demanding High Court to Rayalaseema besides Minister to come out and hear their plea. Scuffles took place between the police and advocates during which some people sustained injuries on both sides.

The police who sensed that the situation was spinning out of control informed the minister, who gave permission to a few Advocates JAC leaders to see him.

Bar association president V Naga Lakshmi Devi and other JAC leaders met Chandra Mohan Reddy and handed over a representation to him. They explained the need for setting up of HC in the region in accordance with the Sri Bagh Pact.

Responding to the representation of the lawyers, the minister assured them that he would take up the issue to the notice of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and try to resolve the issue amicably.
