The scheme is aimed to protect health of both mother and antenatal baby to prevent mortality rate and to promote institutional deliveries in government hospitals. The scheme is being implemented through a special ward at district headquarters hospitals across the country.

As part of it Srikakulam MP K Rammohan Naidu inaugurated the scheme at government RIMS hospital on July 9, 2016. As per guidelines of PMSMA, medical tests would be conducted for pregnant women on 9th of every month at the special ward.

Based on the result of tests, high-risk group pregnant women would be identified, and special medical care would be provided to those women and remaining are being provided regular medicine.

The high-risk group pregnant women would be identified based on previous caesarian pregnancy (PCP), anemic status, hypertension during pregnancy, malaria, thyroid, blood sugar, HIV positive, type-2 hepatitis-B, bad obstetric history (BOH) and those women would be given special care. In 2016, from July to December, in total 1,053 women were availed services, of them 231 women were identified as high-risk group.

In 2017, from January to December, in total 1139 pregnant women tested under the scheme of them 394 were identified as high-risk cases. In 2018, so far 148 women availed services of them 30 are found as high-risk category.

In a span of 20 months since its inauguration a total of 2,340 women availed services under PMSMA of them 655 had been identified under high-risk category. “After identifying risk cases we suggested medicine and referred them to concerned primary health centers (PHC), community health centers (CHC) and area hospitals for further care till delivery,” gynaecologist at RIMS, D Parvathi told The Hans India.

“With the scheme, we are preventing maternity risks and pregnant women need to utilise services timely,” RIMS superintendent Dr K Suneel Naik told The Hans India.
