Vijayawada: The electricity contract employees continued the strike on the second day on Wednesday boycotting duties in protest against the inaction of the government to concede their demands.

More than 20,000 contract employees working in Transco, APGenco and other departments began indefinite strike on Tuesday. Nearly, 2,000 contract employees are working in Narla Tatarao Thermal power station (NTTPS), Ibrahimpatnam near Vijayawada.

The employees boycotted duties for the second consecutive day on Wednesday. The employees are demanding regularisation of services, equal pay for equal work as per the directive of the Apex Court and payment of adequate compensation to the kin of the families in case of death of workers.

The higher officials of the Transco held discussions with the representatives of the Joint Action Committee of Contract Employees Unions to resolve the problem. The higher officials informed that they would take the demands of the employees to the notice of the government.

The contract employees get salary of Rs 10,500 per month and they are demanding pay of Rs.18,500. The union leaders hoped the government may hike the salary by Rs 4,000 or Rs 5,000.

One of the senior leaders of the JAC said the government may consider demand and give hike partly because the demand has been pending for a long time. If the strike of the contract workers continues two or more days, the power production and distribution may be affected in the state.
