Eluru: Police opened fire in the air when a two-member counterfeit currency gang attacked them at Devarapalli village in West Godavari district on Wednesday evening. According to police, Srungavarapu Chittibabu (Krishna district) and Kotepalli Kishore Babu (East Godavari) were going from East Godavari district to Vijayawada on a bike.

On information, Kovvuru police started to check the vehicles on the National highway at Kovvuru. However, the duo slipped from their clutches and moved forward towards Devarapalli. The Kovvuru police while chasing them informed the Devarapalli police about their escape.

The Devarapalli police led by Sub Inspector P Vasu reached Devarapalli centre and started inspection of the vehicles. The two culprits reached Devarapalli centre and the police tried to stop them.

However, they attacked the police and pushed them to escape from there. The Sub-Inspector while chasing the accused took out his revolver and fired two rounds in the air.

Following this firing, the two accused stopped their vehicle at a dhaba on Gopalapuram road. The SI and his staff took both the accused into their custody. They seized fake currency worth Rs 2 lakh from them. The fake currency was in the denomination of Rs 500, Rs 200 and Rs 100. Devarapalli police are investigating.
