Amaravati: Agriculture minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy demanded that the Union government explain the reasons for not giving tax exemptions to Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking to reporters at his residence on Thursday, the minister said that the Union government had denied Special Category Status(SCS) to Andhra Pradesh on the pretext that the 14th Finance Commission’s recommendations were not allowing it to extend the SCS to new states.

“The Centre told us that the SCS will not be continued to 11 states after March 2017. But, now it is giving tax exemptions worth Rs 24,000 crore. We want to ask the Centre why it is denying the tax exemptions and Special Category Status as well to Andhra Pradesh,” he asked.

The state government had agreed special package only on the promise of Union government that all the benefits of SCS would be given under the special package. “But now there is no special package and no Special Category Status accorded to the state,” the minister said.

Somireddy said people were observing the injustice being done by the NDA government to the state and added that the Centre must explain the reasons for denying the tax exemptions to the state.
