Vijayawada: Tension prevailed near Penamaluru police station when students of a hostel clashed with sticks and pelted stones against each other on Thursday. Though the incident took place near Penamalur police station, police failed to prevent the clash for 30 minutes.

According to sources, dispute broke out between a private hostel warden Srilatha and third year engineering student Surya Vamsi on Wednesday late night over payment of hostel fee of Rs 1,400. Some students, along with a reporter and cameraman of a vernacular news channel went to the hostel on Thursday afternoon to ask why the warden’s family members assaulted the student.

This led to a heated argument and later clash between the two sides. Some students supported the hostel warden and some others supported the student. The warden, along with her husband and six other persons, attacked the reporter and cameraman. Scribes staged a dharna in front of the police station demanding the arrest of the accused for breaking the camera.
