Tirupati: Making the normal citizens aware of saving a life in case of emergency, Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) took up a free training programme on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) with mannequins at Mahati Auditorium here on Monday. It was the goal of SVIMS to make citizens of Tirupati CPR smart and working on it since November 2017.

So far, the SVIMS have trained more than 10,000 people and the immediate target is to train another 25,000. The team of doctors, nurses and other staff participated in the programme to impart training to those interested. Director-cum-Vice-Chancellor of SVIMS Dr TS Ravikumar has first demonstrated the procedure of CPR which was also visually presented by a doctor through powerpoint presentation.

Basic Life Support (BLS) itself is known as CPR which saves the life for a few minutes till the ambulance comes in. Under the process, first the victim should be taken to nearby safe place and pulse for the carotid arteries should be checked along with breath for 5-10 seconds. In the absence of pulse and breath, one has to give the victim chest compressions by ensuring proper position, depth and volume of pressure.

Compressions have to be given at centre of chest, lower half of sternum bone between the two nipples with wrists, elbows and shoulders at a straight line. The two hands should be interlocked and push hard with a depth of 5-6 cm at the said place to give 30 compressions followed by two breaths alternatively per minute.

Immediately after that, the forehead has to be stretched upward, close the nostrils and pull the chin downwards to open the mouth of victim to give two breaths through mouth.
