Vijayawada: The plans are afoot for making Vijayawada a pollution-free city. According to officials, the district administration, forest department and Pollution Control Board jointly finalised an action plan to develop greenery and other precautionary measures to minimise the pollution levels in the city.

As many as 33,000 identified shops in the city should nurture two plants in front of their business establishments and every house owner should also plant two trees on the premises of their houses.

The officials have taken this decision after identifying the pollution levels which already crossed danger levels. The increasing vehicular movement and construction activity are also some of the reasons for the increasing pollution levels, a study by officials revealed.

According to the study, the Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) is above the normal levels in the city air. As per the norms of Pollution Control Board (PCB), the SPM level should not cross 100 micron grams per cubic metre. But presently the SPM crossed 115 mg on average in the city limits.

The SPM levels have crossed normal parametres following developments after state bifurcation, including shifting of employees from Hyderabad to Vijayawada city. After the shifting of administrative setup to Vijayawada city, the vehicle movement has registered 10 per cent growth.

As many as 7.10 lakh vehicles are moving on the city roads daily, as per the study by Krishna District Transport Department. Besides, construction activity has also registered an abnormal growth rate. Several new buildings, including commercial and residential buildings, are coming up at several areas in the city.

But the negligence of builders like using road margins for dumping of construction material is also the cause of increasing dust. The officials have taken several precautionary measures like watering on roads and fixing covers on building works locations to reduce the pollution.

The district administration has also identified the SPM levels are gradually declining to 82 mg which was revealed in a recent study, said District Collector B Lakshmikantham. He said that all the house owners and shops owners should nurture trees. Every tree gives 260 pounds of oxygen while it receives 48 pounds carbon dioxide, he said. The pollution could be controlled, and weather also could be maintained as cool with nurturing the plants in the city, he said.
