Guntur: A 65-year-old man was burnt alive and his wife sustained burn injuries when the hut in which they were residing at Kottapeta in Chebrolu mandal caught fire at 1.30 am on Saturday. Police suspect that fire accident might have occurred due to an electric short circuit.

According to police, Pogula Mallaiah and his wife Devakamma (60) were fast asleep when the fire mishap took place. Suddenly, a fire broke out and Mallaiah was burnt alive in the flames. Devakamma sustained fifty per cent burn injuries and has been shifted to the GGH in Guntur for treatment.

Guntur South DSP RVSN Murthy said that the hut was reduced to ashes and Mallaih could not come out of the hut as flames engulfed it. Locals shifted Devakamma to the GGH for treatment. “We suspect short circuit might be the cause for fire accident. We registered a case and took up investigation”, he said.
