Indira Gandhi Zoological Park and Paryavarana Margadarsi Visakha Organisation jointly organised the World Wildlife Day here on Saturday  calling upon the people to help create awareness and take action to ensure the survival of the big bats. The day was celebrated with the theme of ‘Big cats – predators under threat’.

Visakhapatnam: Indira Gandhi Zoological Park and Paryavarana Margadarsi Visakha Organisation jointly organised the World Wildlife Day here on Saturday calling upon the people to help create awareness and take action to ensure the survival of the big bats. The day was celebrated with the theme of ‘Big cats – predators under threat’.

As many as 150 students from two schools, NGO’s, visitors participated in the rally. Prof. Manjulatha, Department of Zoology, Andhra University, explained about big cats and their threats, including biotic interference caused by human beings. Appala Reddy from India Youth For Society (IYFS) explained to the students on the role of zoological parks and safari in conservation of wildlife.

B Vijaya Kumar, curator, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, explained the intrinsic value and contribution to the ecological, genetic, economic, scientific, educational value to the well-being of humans and sustainable development. He also informed that about 13 million hectares of forests are being lost every year.
