Tension prevailed at Flower Market area (Poola Angalla centre) in Pulivendula town in the district on Sunday when TDP and YSRCP activists resorted to stone pelting at each other over open debate between leaders of two parties over development in the constituency since 1971,when former chief minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy entered politics.
Kadapa: Tension prevailed at Flower Market area (Poola Angalla centre) in Pulivendula town in the district on Sunday when TDP and YSRCP activists resorted to stone pelting at each other over open debate between leaders of two parties over development in the constituency since 1971,when former chief minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy entered politics.
Police had to resort to lathi-charge to disperse the clashing groups. A traffic sub-inspector, K Chinranjeevulu, suffered minor injuries in the incident and prohibitory orders under Section 144 Crpc were imposed.
District superintendent of police Babujee Attada, who rushed to the town, told the media that no one was hurt in the incident and the situation was under control. He urged the people not to move on the streets except for emergencies.
It all began on February 28 when TDP former MLC V Satish Reddy reportedly stating that Pulivendula did not see any development since YS Rajasekhar Reddy entered politics and had been witnessing development only since TDP came to power in 2014.
He also called for an open debate on the issue with opposition YSRCP leaders. After Kadapa MP Y S Avinash Reddy accepting the challenge for the open debate, Satish Reddy announced on March 2 that open debate would be held at Flower Market area of Pulivendula on March 4.
On Sunday, when MP Avinash Reddy came to Pulivendula town at around 11 am along with a huge number of followers for the debate on Sunday, sensing trouble, police took him into custody amid stiff resistance from his supporters.
Similarly, Satish Reddy was also held at Vempalle while he was on his way to Pulivendula for the debate. However, situation turned serious at about 3.30 pm with the police reportedly allowing TDP MLC B.Tech Ravi, and party leader Ramgopal Reddy to the Flower Market Centre.
Their presence at the debate venue triggered stone pelting by rival groups of TDP and YSRCP supporters. Police resorted to caning to separate the rival groups and bring situation under control. The YSRCP leaders also entered into a heated exchange with police for allowing TDP leaders to Flower Market area.
When contacted, former TDP MLC V Satish Reddy admitted that he challenged the opposition party leaders for an open debate on the state of Pulivendula in 1971 when YSR entered politics and development since 2009 when Y S Jaganmohan Reddy entered politics.
“But I have never said Rajasekhar Reddy did nothing for Pulivendula constituency. It was all media creation. I also never said we are ready for confrontation with YSRCP on the issue.”
MP Avinash Reddy while speaking to The Hans India, alleged that Satish Reddy had deliberately tried to create panic in the Pulivendula in the name of open debate. “If he was really sincere on debate over development, why he says he was ready for confrontation (galata)?” he said.
