Kakinada: The state government was encouraging theatre arts and artists, said the APSFTTDC (AP State Film Television and Theatre Development Corporation) chairman Ambika Krishna.

The 18-day Nandi Theatre Festival began at the Young Men’s Happy Club on a grand manner here on Sunday. It will continue till March 28. Ambika Krishna participated as the chief guest of the inaugural ceremony of the festival.

After lighting the lamp to mark the start of the even, he said that they were organising these Nandi theatre festivals in four places, Nandyal, Kurnool and Rajamahendravaram besides Kakinada in the state.

He further said that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was encouraging theatre arts to make all the people happy by creating Aanandandhra Pradesh (A Happy AP) and added that the government had allocated Rs 2 crore for organising these Nandi Theatre festivals.

He also said that 42 drama societies were participating in this Nandi Theatre festival at Kakinada. According to him, theme of these festivals is Prajala Kosam Naatakam, Naatakam Kosam Samajam (Play for the People and Society is for Play).

Announcing that Kandukuri awards would be given to those artistes who contributed immensely to the theatre arts in the state, he said artistes can apply for the same with their details online on the website www.apsftvtdc.in, from March 15 to 31. Those who are selected for the Kandukuri awards would be presented with them on April 16.

Kakinada city MLA Vanamadi Venkateswara Rao and MLC Chikkala Ramachandra Rao also spoke at the inaugural ceremony and expressed their happiness over conducting the festival for the first time in Kakinada city. Later, Sri Murthy Cultural Association performed Kavayatri Molla (Poetess Molla) as the first play to start the Theatre Festival in a grand style. Kakinada MP Thota Narasimham, APFTTDC general manager Sesha Sai and others participated.
