Kakinada: Police foiled the attempt by Congress leaders to stage a dharna in front of BJP office here on Wednesday. East Godavari District Congress president Pantam Nanaji called his party leaders and activists to stage a dharna at the BJP office.
On Wednesday, Nanaji conducted a press conference at district Congress party office on the “betrayal by TDP and BJP on Special Category Status’ where he called upon all parties to unite for achieving SCS to the state.
He urged the TDP and YSRCP to come forward to agitate collectively against the Centre and also alleged that when BJP was in the opposition party at the Centre it demanded SCS to AP for 10 years but now it was neglecting the same.
After the press conference, Congress leaders and activists set out to stage a dharna at the local BJP party office . But on learning of the proposed dharna, police reached DCC office and shut the gates preventing them to come out. DCC president Nanaji and other Congress leaders raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi describing him a “betrayer” and displayed placards demanding SCS to AP .
At one stage, the Congress leaders tried to come out of their party office by forcibly opening DCC office gates, but police foiled the attempt. Congress leaders entered into an argument with police demanding that they be allowed to stage their protest.
When they continued their protest, police took Nanaji into custody and shifted him to III Town police station. Congress leaders Kamana Prabhakara Rao, Pantam Indira and others condemned the arrest of Nanaji and continued their protest at the police station. Later, he was let off in the evening.
