Amaravati: The public meeting organised by the Jana Sena party at Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur on Wednesday on party’s foundation day, witnessed a stampede like situation due to failure of crowd management by the police and party cadre.

In the meeting, the mob particularly the youth moved like in a wave from one block to another resulting in chaos among women and girls sat on the chairs at a gallery, just in front of the main dais.

The mob jumped from one block to another towards main dais and thrown away the barricades placed between them. The entire gallery was divided into 16 blocks to facilitate public and another two blocks created for VIPs and VVIPs of the party and one block was allocated for media.

The women sat in a block just backside to VIPs. The mob started entering the women’s block by jumping from its back block. The mob removed the barricades and pushed towards women as the Jana Sena cadre and police failed in controlling them.

With women clamour for help, the police requested in mike from dais that the youth should not cause any injuries to women. A police officer requested the mob that, “I beg you. Don’t rush on women. Please. Don’t jump barricades. Don’t remove barricades. Allow women to leave that place.”

Then the police and Jana Sena teams rushed to the area and replaced the barricades. After few minutes, another mob in another block also resorted to the same by jumping on barricades. Then the police and Jana Sena cadre started small lathi charge to control the mob. Here also the mob removed the barricades and one youth suffered with leg fracture. He was taken away from the venue after lathi charge.

Srilakshmi, who came from East Godavari district stated that she feared of unexpected stampede. The party organisers and police should control the mob in a public meeting like this, she observed. She said that many women suffered minor injuries while they were rushing out from the gallery. It is worth to mention here that a stampede claimed one death in previous public meeting of Jana Sena party in Kakinada.
