Tirupati: Prof P Gowtham of Anna University, Chennai suggested that SVIMS, IIT-Tirupati and IISER-Tirupati should come together and put joint efforts to establish a huge tissue bank for all kinds of tissues which may cost around Rs 30-40 crore and it can be easily get from Department of Biotechnology of Ministry of Science and Technology.

Addressing the two-day national Seminar on ‘Bioinformatics’ at Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) here, on Wednesday, Prof Gowtham said, this will be exceedingly important as Tirupati has been growing as a science hub.

He even opined that SVIMS can ask people from IISER and IIT to take courses in ‘Biostatistics’ etc. at their university because any project submitted to DBT or DST now, has to have some clinical support. “The whole idea of bioinformatics is moving towards clinical medicine through which one can predict diseases at the budding stage.

This seminar will be a good platform for bioinformaticians and clinicians to learn and exchange knowledge,” he observed. SVIMS Director cum Vice-Chancellor Dr TS Ravikumar stressed that, academia and industry collaboration has been required in order to further the rational drug design with computer modelling and also to pave way for developing new drugs for things that were staring at us.

“It poses a big challenge unless we are ahead of the game,” he opined. As far as tuberculosis is concerned, he added, India cannot be proud being the world’s largest contributor of newly diagnosed tuberculosis cases. Also, the country cannot be proud of emerging antibiotic resistance. Such things will provide impetus to move faster.

Hence, if funding can be get through academia and industrial collaboration, the Director assured, to provide a matching grant through Balaji Aarogya Varaprasadini Scheme. If Rs 10 crore funding the department gets, a matching grant of Rs 10 crore will be provided, he explained. Dr Ravikumar also said that some space for academia and industry collaboration will be provided at CfAR building soon.

Also, the 91.52 acres of SVIMS land near airport was entangled in court and all efforts were underway to get back that which may settle in a few months and after that it was planned to establish an incubation centre there. Dean Dr PVLN Srinivasa Rao, Registrar Dr TC Kalawat, Dr V Suresh and Dr A Umamaheswari took part.
