Tirupati: The World Consumers Day was observed jointly by the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA)-Tirupati Chapter, South India Regional Committee (SIRC) of All India Council for Mass Education and Development (AICMED) and Institute of Engineers here on Thursday.

Sri Venkateswara University College of Arts Principal Prof G Savaraiah participated as chief guest. In his address, he said that the consumers are key in making the business successful. In this age of digitalisation of markets, one must be careful about cyber-crimes and use of debit and credit cards. He made an appeal to the teachers and students to disseminate the consumers protection laws among the rural poor and disadvantaged groups, who can be easily cheated by the business community.

SIRC President and UGC emeritus fellow Prof MC Reddeppa Reddy presented a study results relating to the level of awareness among rural women regarding the expiry dates on food items, checking of MRP rates on pockets, weight on items, adulteration of foods, aware of consumer rights etc. Dr C Aruna Kumari of SPW College spoke on adulteration of foods and its impact on human health.

IIPA-Tirupati Chapter Chairman Prof A Ranga Reddy in his presidential address brought out various Consumer Protection Acts and Laws. Vijaya Bhaskar, Prof T Lakshmamma, Prof K Sudha Rani, A Samanthakamani and others took part.
