Hyderabad: Denduluru MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar got relief from the High Court at Hyderabad which suspended the order of conviction passed against him in a case of assault. He was facing disqualification as MLA due to this conviction.

Justice Shameem Akhter gave this order on Friday while dealing with a petition filed by Prabhakar. He had been charged by the police for an alleged assault in a meeting in 2011 when the then minister was interacting with people during ‘Rachabanda’ programme.

The court of Judicial First Class Magistrate at Bhimadole imposed punishment of two years of imprisonment upon the MLA last month. He appealed against the order in the First Additional Sessions Court at Eluru. The Sessions Court suspended the sentence and granted bail but refused to suspend the conviction.

Senior counsel T Niranjan Reddy, appearing for the petitioner, pointed out to the judge how the court at Bhimadole did not consider the evidence of the MP who was on stage at the time of incident. Though the witnesses gave mutually contradictory statements, the court convicted the MLA, he said.
