The Diesel Loco Shed of Visakhapatnam has achieved yet another milestone by getting certificate ISO 50001:2011 for energy management system in addition to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and OHSAS 18001:2017. 

Visakhapatnam: The Diesel Loco Shed of Visakhapatnam has achieved yet another milestone by getting certificate ISO 50001:2011 for energy management system in addition to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and OHSAS 18001:2017. Visakhapatnam Diesel Loco Shed, the largest Loco Shed in the country, was established in 1965 in the erstwhile undivided Southeastern Railway.

The specialty of the shed is not only its size of the holding, but also the variety of locomotives it has been maintaining and for conducting trials of new technology by RDSO. The Visakhapatnam Diesel Loco Shed earned laurels for innovative technological improvement in existing locos to provide additional safety measures, increasing fuel efficiency, monitoring maintenance, successful improvement in load distribution system for operation of heavier and longer trains particularly in terrain like KK line.

Divisional Railway Manager of Waltair Mukul Saran Mathur received the energy management system certificate, ISO 50001:2011 on Tuesday on behalf of Diesel Loco Shed in the presence of officers and staff. A lot of effort has been undertaken by DLS to get the certification by implementing various energy saving measures, including replacement of CFL, tube lights and metal halides with LED fittings.

With these measures, it has already saved two per cent of energy as compared to the previous year. In addition, a 300 KWP solar panel has been installed which is able to cater 50 per cent of its average load during peak hours. Visakhapatnam Diesel Shed with its outstanding performance in availability of locos it has earned the East Coast Railway to stand the best among all zonal railways in the country.
