Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) on Wednesday announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of the sanitation worker, who died in a manhole while doing work.

It may be noted that Gunja Gangaraju, 37, a sanitation worker, died of suffocation after falling into the manhole at VAMBAY Colony on Tuesday.
The body was retrieved late in the night on Tuesday and post-mortem was conducted on Wednesday.

The corporation announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh and the state government announced Rs 5 lakh under the Chandranna Beema scheme to the kin of the deceased.

The corporation also announced a house under the JNNURM to the family and sanitation worker job to the wife under the DWCRA scheme.
Municipal Commissioner J Nivas expressed condolences to the family over the demise of the worker.

CPM CRDA Region Coordination Committee convener Ch Babu Rao and other leaders met the Commissioner on Wednesday and requested the latter to provide advanced machinery for cleaning the manholes in the city. Babu Rao also discussed about the payment of compensation to the kin of the victim.
