Vizianagaram: Measures taken by the police to contain road accidents yielded good results as the number of deaths has come down in the past few months in Vizianagaram district.

The number of accidents were increasing in the past few years as the rise in number of two wheelers. Riding two-wheelers became very common and even minors are also riding sans licence. Similarly, auto-rickshaws are plying with overload and meeting with accidents and pushing the families into grief.

Therefore, police launched vehicle checking under all the police station in the district. Sub-Inspectors, including traffic police, intensified vehicle checking and imposed penalties for riding bikes without licences, not wearing helmets and seat belts for those who are driving cars.

Police registered many drunken driving cases. It is learnt that police identified danger spots, curves and installed boards to alert the drivers and riders.

All these efforts gave good results as the number of accidents has come down in February 2018 when compared to last year and deaths also come down. Director General of Police M Malakondaiah applauded the district police personnel for taking steps in curbing road accidents.

Superintendent of Police P Palaraju said two-wheeler riders and car drivers should be careful when they come on to the roads and advised them to be cautious about their lives and the lives of others too.

He called upon the vehicle owners to carry the driving licence and added that drivers of auto-rickshaws should not overload their vehicles. Vehicle checking is a continuous activity and people especially youth should not ride or drive after drinking, the Superintendent of Police suggested.
