Vijayawada: Pochareddy Rakesh Reddy of Chittoor district has been elected president of the Andhra Pradesh Youth Congress Committee. As many as 20 candidates contested for the Youth Congress president post.

According to a press release by the Congress party, Rakesh Reddy got 2,652 votes and was elected to the post of the AP Youth Congress chief. Atluri Vijay Kumar, ABV Varma, Subhan Vali and Ramarao were elected vice-presidents.

Rakesh Reddy with his followers took out a victory rally on Eluru Road after winning the election. Briefing media persons on the occasion, Rakesh Reddy said that on the instructions of the party high command, the Youth Congress would continue its fight for the Special Category Status (SCS) to the State.

He lamented that the Congress party had paid heavy price for bifurcation of the State though many parties supported the division of the State. He said the State will get SCS under the rule of UPA government which he said will come into power in 2019 elections. Later, he garlanded the statue of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at Challapalli Bungalow centre, Eluru Road.a
