Eluru: Tension prevailed at the Powerpeta Railway Station in the city on Wednesday following the rail roko organised by the YSRCP workers and leaders. The police did not allow them into the railway station and arrested 11 persons, including MLC A Krishna Srinivas.

In response to the call given by YSRCP President YS Jaganmohan Reddy demanding Special Category Status (SCS) to the state, the YSRCP workers and leaders led by MLC and District YSRCP president Alla Kali Krishna Srinivas (Nani) reached Powerpeta Railway Station.

The police tightened security at the railway station and when the workers tried to enter the station, they stopped them. This led to a heated argument between the police and YSRCP workers. When the police tried to push the leaders, a scuffle ensued between them. The irate workers and YSRCP leaders squatted in front of the railway station.

Speaking to the media, MLC Alla Nani lashed out at the police for obstructing the party workers who were fighting relentlessly for the grant of Special Status to the state. The police arrested 11 leaders, including MLC Alla Nani, former MLA Tellam Balaraju, YSRCP Eluru coordinator M Eswari, and shifted them to the Two Town Police Station.

The party workers reached the Two Town Police Station and demanded immediate release of their leaders. As tension started escalating at the police station, the police shifted the 11 leaders to Three Town Police Station. The YSRCP District Women Cell president V Sai Balapadma, BC Cell district president Ghanta Prasada Rao, State secretary Kamma Sivaramakrishna, SC Cell convener Munnula John Gurunath, BC Cell convener Kiladi Durga Rao, leaders Bandaru Kiran Kumar, MRD Balaram and others took part in the agitation.

In Bhimavaram, former MLC Meka Seshu Babu, former MLAs Mudunuri Prasada Raju and Kottu Satyanarayana led the workers to the railway station. They squatted on the railway tracks for some time. The Narsapuram-Nidadavole passenger train was halted as the workers squatted on the tracks. Later, the police told the leaders to disperse.
