Visakhapatnam: A clash ensued between the BJP and CPI over the past observed by the BJP leaders and activists near Old Jail Road area on Thursday.

As a part of the nation-wide protest of the BJP leaders alleging that the opposition parties are not cooperating for a smooth run of Parliament, the city wing of the BJP also staged a day-long hunger strike. Ugly scenes were witnessed in the area when some workers of both the parties hurled footwear at their opponents.

Meanwhile, the CPI activists led by CPI State Assistant Secretary JV Satyanarayana Murty rushed to the BJP hunger strike spot while taking out a rally.Soon after, activists belonging to both the parties had heated arguments which led to a clash.

Suddenly, there is a stampede like situation followed by some of the BJP activists pelted stones and bashed up the Left party activists with slippers. Stunned with the sudden development, police intervened and pacified them.

Later, police arrested the CPI activists and shifted them to Two Town Police Station.Meanwhile, the BJP leaders refuted the allegations that their activists’ pelted stones and slippers at CPI activists. “In fact, the CPI leaders and activists abused BJP and attacked our workers”, the party leaders alleged.

The BJP’s leaders and activists led by State President and MP K Haribabu observed a day-long fast. The CPI leaders, who took out a rally demanding the Special Category Status and Separate Railway Zone to Andhra Pradesh, passed through the Old Jail Road area.

The CPI leaders claimed that they went to the BJP leaders to ask what they did for Andhra Pradesh.ACP (East) A Narasimha Murthy said that they arrested 20 CPI workers for trying to disrupt the fast and alleged attack on the BJP activists.Condemning the arrest of the CPI activists, the Left party leaders decided to intensify the agitations for the SCS and railway zone in the city.
