Eluru: The 127th birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar was celebrated across West Godavari district on Saturday. The Ministers, MLAs, officials and others paid tributes to architect of constitution on the occasion in various places.

In Eluru, Minister for Labour Pithani Satyanarayana paid tributes to the great leader at a meeting organised at Ambedkar Bhavan. He said that on the request of Dalit leaders, the government has considered installing a bronze statue of Ambedkar in Eluru within two months. He said the TDP had strived for the development of Dalits in society with the inspiration of Dr BR Ambedkar. He said the TDP government has taken up the Dalita Tejam programme to unite all Dalits and extend various schemes to them.

In-Charge Collector P Koteswara Rao presiding over the meeting said BR Ambedkar had worked for the uplift of Dalits in society and he had taken up the fight against the superstitions and other social ailments.

MLC Ramu Surya Rao called upon the people to take Ambedkar as inspiration to establish a socialist society. AP State Handicrafts Development Corporation Chairman Pali Prasad, Dalit leaders Polimera Harikrishna, Perike Varaprasad, Chikatipalli Rangaraju, Devarakonda Venkateswrlu, Letala Ramesh Babu, Dasari Ramesh, Netala Ajay Babu addressed the meeting.

The Minister and other dignitaries distributed Rs 52 crore worth scholarships to 23,472 SC students and Rs 19.40 crore worth cheques to 932 SC self-help groups. Additional Joint Collector MH Sheriff, Government Junior College Principal Nirmala Kumari, Social Welfare Joint Director Ranga Lakshmi Devi, SC Corporation Executive Director Ramesh, DRDA Project Director K Srinivasulu and other officials attended the programme. The Minister later distributed Rs.100 crore worth equipment of drip irrigation units, tractors and cars to the beneficiaries.
