Visakhapatnam: The drunk and drive offenders will be sent to jail and their license will be cancelled, said Rural Superintendent of Police Rahul Dev Sharma while inaugurating the 29th Road Safety Week celebrations near Nehru Chowk at Anakapalli here on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, Rahul Dev Sharma said that after joining hands with both revenue and transport departments, the accidents rate has come down drastically. The awareness programmes conducted by the police men among the two-wheeler riders, wearing of helmets and car drivers should put on seat belts while driving on the roads were yielding good results.

The policemen should initiate a programme like providing water to wash drivers faces during the night time, mainly the vehicles coming from Nakkapalli, Anakapalli and Kasimkota highway areas to avoid accidents, he said.

As per records, overspeeding on the highways was the main cause for road accidents, he said. Nearly 30 CC cameras have been installed at prime junctions on the Anakapalli highway and lighting system with 24/7 patrolling particularly the road safety vehicles for every 3 kilometers on the highways had played a crucial role in preventing accidents on highways during night times, he added.

As part of road safety week, he observed the policemen will visit the local schools and create awareness regarding road safety among students in the district.
