The collector was the chief guest at the 29th Highway Road Safety Week organised by the Transport department here on Monday.Â
Vijayawada: District collector and road safety committee chairman B Lakshmikantham said over speeding two-wheeler riders without wearing helmet was the prime cause for fatal road accidents. The collector was the chief guest at the 29th Highway Road Safety Week organised by the Transport department here on Monday.
He said that everyone should follow traffic rules to prevent fatal accidents. Twelve meetings have been organised to prevent road accidents which resulted in reduction in number of accidents, he said.
He added, in 2016, about 839 persons were died in 2,968 accidents and in 2017, 735 persons were died in 2,724 accidents. He said that they could minimise the number of accidents by 244 and deaths by 104. He said in the first quarter of 2018, 60 persons were died in 232 accidents. He said that about 17.8 per cent accidents were reduced by taking various preventive steps.
The district stands third in controlling road accidents, said the collector. Joint Transport Commissioner SAV Prasad Rao said that more number of accidents were occurred in May, so the Central government had decided to organise highway safety week in April last week.
Prasad said that to bring down the number of road accidents the Chief Minister had released Rs 100 crore. Deputy Transport Commissioner Meera Prasad said 3.50 lakh cases were booked for driving without helmets.
In the wake of accidents, he said both the rider and the pillion rider should wear helmets. High safety week is being organised from April 23 to 30 and at mandal-levels also the transport department officers were organising various programmes on road safety week, he added. The Collector released a poster, pamphlets and stickers on the occasion.
Joint Commissioner of Police Kanthi Rana Tata, APSRTC Regoinal Manager PV Rama Rao, Krishna District Lorry Owners Association president K V Rama Rao, secretary A Sadasiva Rao, AP Lorry owners president Eswar Rao and others were present.
